Packrafting „de luxe“ in Montenegro - 4 days in the Tara - Canyon
Sometimes pictures can tell more than words. Have a look at this Tara Video.
Montenegro is a real gem. The tiny state combines all the beauties of South-Eastern Europe into its limited space: A coastline with mediterranean vegetation and age-old towns as well as alpine mountain-areas in the backcountry with small villages that seem to be lost in time.
But no doubt: the absolute highlight for all those who love nature is the Tara River Gorge. Over the centuries the mighty crystal clear water of the Tara River has carved Europes most impressive and deepest canyon into the massive Rocks of the Durmitor Mountains enabling the arising of an unique ecological system characterized by high water quality, rocky, pebbly terraces, sandy beaches, high cliffs, numerous caves, an excessive vegetation and a plentiful fauna. As such Tara was inscribed into the ecological biosphere reservations of the world and is protected under an internationally issued convention. It is part of the Durmitor Nationalpark. Paddling the Tara River Canyon means floating through an entirely different universe. On our tours we get the opportunity to explore this magic world at our own pace. You'll see!
In summertime when the water level is low the Tara river offers a lively current and several whitwater passages which besides some exceptions can be mainly classified as WW II-III. In general portages are easily possible with our Packrafts so that the few really difficult passages (up to WW V) can be bypassed as individually needed. On these trips we bring our own camping gear and food supplies for up to 4 days and camp directly in the canyon without getting in contact with the usual rafting-tourist groups.
After a two day paddling adventure we leave the Tara river behind and start our hiking tour out of the canyon. There is a total of about 1000 meters of altitude to conquer before we reach a beautiful plateau with traditional agriculture and pastoral farming. Along the way there are stunning sights of the highest peaks of the Durmitor mountains.
This tour is suitable for people who like to be in touch with nature and who have already made experiences with whitewater rafting up to grade III as well as with multiday-backpacking-outdoor trips in little tapped regions. Personal light and functional outdoor equipment such as appropriate clothing, a tent, a sleeping bag, a stove etc. good corporal conditions and a realistic self-assesment are absolutely necessary!
We suggest to do this trip together with the tour "Lake Skadar".
